Visit amazing waterfalls in the south of Brazil. Foz do Iguaçu is a top destination for travelers of South America.

Brazil is much more than beautiful beaches. A trip to the southern state of Paraná reveals one of the countries most popular tourist destinations, the Cataratas do Iguaçu. These beautiful waterfalls are located in the town of Foz do Iguaçu, often translated in English as Iguassu. Foz rests at the point where the countries of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet.

Housed in the beautiful Iguaçu National Park, travelers can get an up close look at rainforest vegetation and powerful, awe inspiring waterfalls. This visitor friendly park provides easy access for a memorable adventure.

Visiting the Park

Iguaçu National Park is located close to the local airport and is easily accessible by car. Guests purchase tickets at the main visitor’s center and load a bus to be taken on a 10 minute ride into the park for viewing of the falls.

There are several tour options available for those wishing to embark on a more rugged adventure. Hiking, climbing and boat tours are available for an additional charge. The bus stops at each of these stations along its way into and out of the park.

Visitors who wish to walk the trails and see the falls on their own should get off the bus at the third stop. At this point sits a large map which outlines the walk down along the edge of the river to view the beautiful water and scenery. The walk is on a concrete path with railing. Navigation of several areas with stairs is necessary.

Along the walk travelers can enjoy views of waterfalls across the river which are part of the country of Argentina. In addition, some interesting animals, unique birds and exotic flowers are sure to be seen. The path makes its way to the most exciting area of the Devil’s Throat. Here the powerful waters meet to create a waterfall and with the sun’s reflection produce subtle rainbows.

At Devil’s Throat guests can walk out onto an elevated observation deck to get a close look at the powerful waters. The open areas with rocks and vegetation all around provide excellent photo opportunities.

Park Details

The park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. with the last bus leaving for the falls at 4:30 p.m. A self-guided tour can take about 2 hours depending on the visitor's pace. Parking costs R$12.00 ($7.25 USD) for the day. Entrance to the park is R$20.50 ($15.00 USD) per person. Tours such as boating or hiking are extra.

There are many helpful, English-speaking staff members present at the visitor’s center. Information such as audio played on the bus into the park and park signs are in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

There is a snack bar with restrooms halfway along the hike and again at the end of the trail. A gift shop, jewelry shop and restaurant are located at the bus pick-up area at the end of the self-guided tour.

Tips for Planning

While much of the trail is along shaded area, the sun can be very intense and hot. Wear sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses and light breathable fabrics. Carry a water bottle and drink often to stay hydrated. The concrete trail can become wet and slippery from rain and the mist from the falls. Wear comfortable shoes with good traction for navigating the walkways.

Iguaçu National Park is a popular tourist destination for South Americans and others around the world. The area can become very crowded on Brazilian holidays, especially those that fall near weekends and during South America’s summer months of December to February. Weekdays and fall or winter months often offer less crowds and cooler temperatures.
