When searching in tourist brochures or guides for tourist attractions in the state of Mato Grosso in West Brazil there seems little on offer. The question is how much longer that will last. Tangará da Serra is one of Brazil's potential tourist locations, as the town's Secretaria de Turismo is happy to point out.

The natural scenery of Mato Grosso invites the traveller to a holiday that includes tourist attractions like snorkelling, scuba diving and mountain biking, or relaxing at a resort in a natural setting. But where does one find the tourist information necessary to enjoy these attractions?
Tangará da Serra, with 80,000 inhabitants, is a city focused on agriculture – thousands of hectares are cultivated with soya and sugarcane. But with the arrival of the World Cup Football in Brazil in 2014, and Mato Grosso hosting some games in its capital of Cuiabá, the state seems to have found a motivation to develop its tourist potential.
At this moment Tangará da Serra doesn't have a tourist infrastructure. There is no Tourist Information Centre and apart from Portuguese hardly any other language is spoken. Tangará da Serra does have a Secretaria de Turismo and its staff, Guillermo and Ricardo, go out of their way to help travellers in finding their way around the town and the region. They provide information on:

The Exposerra in Tangará da Serra
Tangará da Serra has a unique tourist attraction: the Exposerra. This yearly, ten-day event in September focuses on agricultural issues like providing information on fertilizers, the presentation of agricultural machinery and a cattle market. It provides a high concentration of entertainment in terms of a fair, eateries and, of special interest, the nightly rodeos where cowboys are challenged to stay on a wild bull for at least eight seconds. It is a perfect way for a traveller to get an insight into Brazil's forms of entertainment.
